Family History
William was illegitimately born William Herron McKay in the household of William Herron and Margaret Drysdale where his birth mother, Sophia McKay, was a domestic servant. Sophia was related to William's wife Margaret through her grandmother Helen Drysdale who was sister of David Drysdale, Margaret Drysdale's father.
While no mention is made of the father, it is interesting to note that William and Margaret's oldest living son David could be a candidate. After marriage in 1979, his children are named in accordance with the Scottish naming pattern but there is no oldest son William
