EAST FACE: "Erected by Samuel Barr, Burn, to the memory of William Barr, Burn, who died 14 Feb 1844 in his 70th. year. Also his wife Ann Steele who died 2 june 1851 in her 69th. year. And of Anne Steel Callan their grand-daughter who died 13th. April 1870 aged 17 years. Also Nancy (Agnes) Bunton, his wife, died May 1889 aged 72 years. the above Samuel Barr died 11 Dec. 1889 aged 77 years. 850
Samuel and Agnes had 12 children, one named Samuel, born 21 March 1848, who married Jane "Jeannie" Hamilton on 13 June 1871 at Lesmahagow. Another, Christina b. 1858 (my grandmother) married my grandfather Andrew Gray b.1858 in Stonehouse.850
In the 1881 census, John Barr is shown as head of household at Dillar's Farm, Lesmahagow, with Christina Barr (his sister) as housekeeper and Andrew Gray, farm labourer. So, here was Andrew living under the same roof with his future wife and brother in-law! they were married the following year, 1882 in Lesmahagow. In the 1891 census they were living at the "Burn". they had a total of 8 children, the youngest being my father, Andrew, born in 1899. My father married Isabella Young (1903-1996) in 1924 and they also started out their married life at the "Burn." My eldest sister Grace Mc Neish Gray (married name Newman) was born at the "Burn" in 1926.850
