William Bissett Pottinger, a resident of Victoria for sixty-seven years, passed away on Saturday morning at the home of his son, H.D. Pottinger, 730 Vancouver Street. Born in the Orkney Islands in 1854, he came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Pottinger, to Victoria on the barque Knight Bruce, via Cape Horn, arriving here on Christmas eve, 1864, after a six months' voyage.He received his education at the old Craigflower School, where his father was schoolmaster for a number of years. Mr. Pottinger was at one time chief cook on the steamer Beaver, and also worked on the surveying of the old Cariboo Road, and the construction of the N. and N. Railroad.Together with his brother, D.R. Pottinger, he started the first delicatessen store, known as the Ideal Market in Yates Street. He was late chief steward on Dominion Government lighthouse tenders, the Quadra and Newington and other government boats.
WENT OVERSEAS
When the Great War broke out Mr. Pottinger was one of the first to offer his services, although sixty-three years of age and served overseas with the 88th Battalion, C.E.F.
After the war he lived in California with his son for a few years. He has been back in Victoria for the last three years, and until his sickness this last year was a familiar figure to the old-timers on the streets of Victoria.
He is survived by two sons, George of Long Beach California and Henry of Vancouver Street, Victoria; two daughters, Mrs. P. Humber Victoria and Mrs. L. James, Portland; three brothers, James and David, of Victoria, and Thomas, in Florida, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Sands Funeral Chapel at 3:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the Ross Bay Cemetery.
